Issues, Etc. Life Library

When Issues, Etc. was abruptly canceled, a significant Lutheran theological voice of the pro-life movement was silenced. An archive of the Issues, Etc. pro-life programs has been cataloged and assembled by LCMS World Relief-Human Care in the interest of making these highly educational programs available for a new audience of listeners. These are in addition to the Rev. Matthew Harrison files already available through World Relief - Human Care at lcms.org.

I have tested these files and they download very quickly and cleanly.

While looking at the files I was shocked to see public policy articles on LCMS world relief/human care website. Given the way the social gospel is sweeping the church I am concerned that this might lead LCMS into cause orientated liberalism. The leftist social activism now sweeping the evangelical church might become the latest purpose driven fad to hit the LCMS. This would be a serious distraction from our "vision","mission" (lol) of proclaiming Christ and Him Crucified. This focus on Christ and the cross is what made Issues, etc. great. Greg

I suppose one would have to listen to the shows to determine whether public policy issues had indeed overwhelmed the proclamation of Christ.

On the other hand, the proper distinction (as opposed to the improper division) of the two kingdoms certainly makes room for a discussion of public policy within a theological framework.

Finally, the area of Human Care will often touch on both kingdoms at once since works of mercy are more matters of the 1st article and the 5th commandment, but are of great concern to the Lord who says, "As often as you have done it to the least of these, my brothers, you have done it unto me."

The real issue is whether these issues are handled Christocentrically, which was and is the failure of the liberal social gospel agenda.

It was not the issues etc shows which concerned me as much as LCMS Human Care World Concern documents that were visible on the site. Certainly discussion of social issues in a theological context is commendable. What I fear is the advocacy of political solutions to human care problems such as poverty by the church. Such advocacy would sully in my mind the witness of the church. The churches duty is to feed the poor not to advocate that the government feed the poor. We have enough to divide us in the Church, we do not need to inject secular political ideology into the church. Greg

If we did not have a government intrusion into our earning power for social programs the objection would be valid. We do have that happening now. Since ceasar is in our paychecks it is necessary to make sure that money is used on human suffering relief rather than wanton destruction of human life via abortion, unjust war etc.

Sorry for the rant Fr Cwirla

I'm glad these are available.

Is anyone else experiencing sloooow download speeds of the Issues Etc. archive off the KFUO website? I am! It typically took me 1 to 3 minutes to download a one hour (around 7 MB file) episode prior to the show's cancellation. It now literally takes hours to download each show. This leads to to one of two conclusions: 1. The archives are getting hammered with traffic OR 2. The LCMS has purposely limited the download speed of files from the Issues Etc archive. I firmly believe the later is what is actually happened. I know enough about web server to know that download speed of certain files can be limited (kind of like only opening a valve part way). Maybe they think people will get frustrated and stop trying to download. What a true shame for the LCMS leadership to stoop to new lows. I wish I could say I'm surprised, but I'm not.

LCMS Leadership - bring back the Issues Etc. archive without limiting the download speed! I know the "1650" of us who listened to the show would really appreciate it ;-)
